Dental Implants

The Future of Tooth Replacement

Dental implants have evolved into the new standard of care for tooth replacement. They are a fixed, permanent appliances used to replace single or multiple missing teeth in the mouth. The best thing about dental implants is that there is no need to prepare or alter adjacent teeth as is done in order to perform other types of tooth replacement like bridges. Implants preserve the health and structure of the adjacent teeth, as dental implants are independent tooth replacements that support themselves on a titanium root placed into the socket area of the previous tooth.

How Dental Implants Work

Dental implants are titanium steel roots that are placed into the jawbone (in the area of the missing tooth). After the bone has naturally fused around the new artificial root, the implant is structurally sound enough to support a porcelain crown on top. These crowns are matched to other teeth in the mouth and carefully fabricated in one of the highest quality dental laboratories in the area. The end result is an artificial tooth that looks and functions similar to your natural teeth.

The Treatment Process

After your initial consult visit, the process of having dental implants placed in our San Diego dental implant office typically takes 3-6 months from start to finish. In some cases this will include any necessary bone grafting in order to support the new implant tooth. This allows for proper healing time, bone growth and fusion with the new root, and placement of the crown on the structurally sound implant. During the healing time, a provisional crown will be placed over your implant in order to maintain an aesthetic appearance and function in lieu of the permanent crown. All patients receive undivided attention from San Diego dental implant dentist, Dr. Nick Refahi.

Replacement of All Missing Teeth

In some cases, dental implants can be used as an “All on 4” implant supported denture. Implant supported dentures are securely held in place, and take up less area than traditional dentures, making it easier for All on 4 implant denture patients to speak and eat.
